Summer Bridge Program

The Farnum group participated in COSAM’s Summer Bridge program for incoming freshman for the 4th consecutive year. This program helps new college students acclimate to a college environment prior to their first semester. Each year we have participated, students in the program have constructed ice-tray batteries with Cu/Zn electrodes and measured their current-voltage properties as a function of series or parallel combinations. This module emphasis scalable methods of electrochemical energy storage and primes students on fundamental chemistry concepts such as redox reactions and thermodynamics.

Former Undergrads to PhD Chemists

Two former undergraduate students in the lab, Noah Gibson and Alex Stephens, received their PhD’s in chemistry during Summer 2026. Both students overlapped in the lab and went on to have great careers in graduate school. Noah graduated from Yale University under the advisement of Jim Mayer and Alex graduated from UC-Davis working for Cody Pitts. Congrats to both of them!!
